Collecting the Car

YVR keeps its rental operation on the airport site, with counters signposted from the arrivals levels of the domestic and international terminals and the vehicles in the adjacent parkade. Pickup is a walk rather than a shuttle for the on-airport brands.

Winter Tyres Are a Legal Requirement Here

British Columbia requires winter tyres or chains on most numbered provincial highways from 1 October to 30 April. The fine for non-compliance is $121. Regulated sections are marked with signage, and the list includes the routes visitors actually take — the Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler, the Malahat on Vancouver Island, and Highways 4, 14 and 28.

Tyres must carry the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. Mountain passes including the Coquihalla can require chains during any storm, regardless of date. If your plan involves Whistler, the interior or the Rockies between October and April, confirm the tyres at the counter — this is not optional equipment in British Columbia, it is the law.

Driving Away from YVR

The airport sits on Sea Island in Richmond, south of the city, linked by the Arthur Laing and Oak Street bridges. Highway 99 runs north through the city and becomes the Sea-to-Sky to Whistler; south it reaches the US border at Peace Arch. Highway 1, the Trans-Canada, heads east through the Fraser Valley.

Car Hire at YVR — FAQ

Do I need a credit card to rent a car at Vancouver International Airport (YVR)?
In most cases yes. A credit card in the main driver’s name is the norm for the security deposit at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Debit acceptance varies by supplier and is decided at the counter rather than at booking, so confirm it before you travel.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Canada?
Most suppliers set a minimum of 21 and add a young-driver surcharge below 25. QEEQ shows the young-driver fee inside the displayed total, so the price you compare is the price you pay.
Which car rental platform is cheapest at Vancouver International Airport (YVR)?
Europcar is the one direct supplier here — you book the rental company itself rather than a broker reselling its cars, which costs more but removes a layer. For the lowest price, compare it against the brokers on the same dates using the total, not the daily rate.
Is it cheaper to rent at YVR or in Vancouver International?
Airport locations carry concession fees that typically add 10–15% to the base rate, so a city branch can be cheaper. Against that, off-airport pickup costs a shuttle and time, and one-way drop-offs are simpler from the airport. For short rentals the premium is often smaller than the transfer into Vancouver International.
Do I need winter tyres in Canada?
Winter tyres are mandatory in Quebec from 1 December to 15 March and on designated British Columbia highways from 1 October to 30 April. Ontario has no such law, so a car collected in Toronto is not required to carry them.
