Which Platforms Actually Cover Canada

Four of the six platforms we compare operate in Canada. Economybookings and QEEQ list it as part of their global coverage, AutoEurope books it through partner suppliers, and Europcar runs its own network under the same US & Canada programme. Localrent and GetRentacar do not — Canada appears in neither Localrent's 60-destination list nor GetRentacar's directory of 80 countries with active inventory. If you see Canada offered on either, treat it as an error rather than a bargain.

Winter Tyres: The Rule That Catches Visitors

Only two provinces make winter tyres a legal requirement, and their rules differ in both dates and scope.

ProvinceWinter tyresDatesFine
QuebecMandatory, province-wide1 December – 15 March$200–300
British ColumbiaMandatory on designated highways1 October – 30 April$121
OntarioNot required by law
Alberta and the restNot required by law

Quebec runs the strictest programme in the country. Under the Highway Safety Code, every passenger vehicle registered in the province must carry tyres bearing the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol between 1 December and 15 March. Police enforce it with roadside checks. Studded tyres are separately permitted from 15 October to 1 May.

British Columbia takes a route-based approach instead: winter tyres or chains are required on most numbered provincial highways from 1 October to 30 April, with signage marking where the regulated section begins. Sea-to-Sky, the Malahat, and Highways 4, 14 and 28 are among them. Mountain passes such as the Coquihalla can demand chains during any storm.

The trap for renters: Quebec's mandate is written around vehicles registered in Quebec. A car you pick up in Montreal will comply. A car you pick up in Toronto and drive east may not — Ontario has no equivalent law, so the supplier has no obligation to fit winter tyres unless you ask. If your itinerary crosses into Quebec in winter, confirm the tyres with the rental desk before you leave the garage, not after.

Documents and Age

Your national driving licence is accepted across Canada. An International Driving Permit becomes necessary when the licence is not in English or French — it is a translation, not a substitute, so carry both. Most suppliers set a minimum age of 21 and apply a young-driver surcharge below 25.

A credit card in the main driver's name is the norm rather than the exception here, and Europcar in particular refuses debit and prepaid cards outright. If a credit card is a problem, check the deposit terms before booking rather than at the counter.

Distances Are Not European

Toronto to Montreal is roughly 540 km, Vancouver to Calgary about 970 km through mountain passes. One-way rentals between provinces are possible with the major brands but carry drop-off fees that can exceed the rental itself. Price the return leg before assuming a one-way is cheaper.

Best Time to Drive

June to September is the straightforward season — long daylight, open mountain roads, no tyre regulations to track. Late September through October brings autumn colour in Ontario and Quebec with lower rates. December to March is genuinely demanding: short days, snow clearance schedules, and the tyre rules above. Spring thaw in April and May leaves potholes and gravel on secondary roads.

Do I need winter tyres to rent a car in Canada?
It depends on the province and the season. Quebec requires them on all provincially registered vehicles from 1 December to 15 March, and British Columbia requires them on designated highways from 1 October to 30 April. Ontario, Alberta and the remaining provinces have no legal requirement. A rental picked up in Montreal will comply with Quebec law; one picked up in Toronto may not, so ask before driving east in winter.
Which car rental platforms work in Canada?
Four of the six we compare: Economybookings, QEEQ, AutoEurope and Europcar. Localrent and GetRentacar do not operate in Canada — it is absent from Localrent's list of 60 destinations and from GetRentacar's directory of 80 countries with active listings.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Canada?
Only if your licence is not written in English or French. The IDP is a translation of your existing licence, so you must carry both documents together. It does not replace the national licence and is not valid on its own.
Can I drive a Canadian rental car into the United States?
Most major suppliers allow it, but it has to be declared at booking and the insurance has to be extended accordingly. Cross-border travel is one of the terms that varies most between suppliers, so confirm it in writing rather than assuming.
