Winter Rentals: What Changes

Driving a rental car in winter conditions introduces challenges that don't exist in warmer months โ€” from legal requirements for winter tires and snow chains to dramatically different road conditions. Being prepared for winter driving is not just about safety; it's about avoiding fines, insurance voids, and the stress of being unprepared on a snowy mountain pass.

Winter Tire Requirements by Country

Many European countries legally require winter tires during certain months. Driving without them when they're required can result in fines, and more importantly, your rental insurance may not cover accidents that occur while driving on summer tires in winter conditions.

Rental Company Winter Policies

In countries where winter tires are mandatory, rental companies should provide them automatically during the required period. However, don't assume โ€” confirm at booking that winter tires are included and verify them at pickup. Check the tread depth and look for the M+S (Mud and Snow) marking or the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol on the tire sidewall.

Some rental companies charge extra for winter tires or winter packages (โ‚ฌ5โ€“15/day). In Scandinavia, studded tires may be available as an upgrade โ€” these provide superior grip on ice but are not permitted in all countries.

Snow Chains

In mountainous areas, snow chains may be required on certain roads even if you have winter tires. Alpine countries (Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy) frequently close mountain passes to vehicles without chains. Rental companies may provide chains on request or for an additional fee โ€” ask at pickup if you plan to drive mountain roads.

If you've never fitted snow chains, practice in a parking lot before hitting the road. Fitting them in a blizzard on a narrow mountain road is not the time to learn. Most chains come with instructions, and YouTube tutorials for your specific chain type are very helpful.

Winter Driving Techniques

Reduce speed significantly. On snow and ice, stopping distances can be 10x longer than on dry road. What feels like a safe speed probably isn't.

Increase following distance. Leave at least 4โ€“6 seconds between you and the car ahead, rather than the usual 2โ€“3 seconds.

Brake gently and early. Harsh braking triggers ABS or causes skids. Start braking well before you need to stop.

Watch for black ice. Bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas freeze first. If the temperature is near 0ยฐC, assume these surfaces may be icy even when the rest of the road looks clear.

Keep the fuel tank at least half full. Cold weather increases fuel consumption, and you may need to idle the engine for heat if stuck in traffic or snow.
