Renting a Car at Tenerife Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Tenerife South Airport Reina Sofía (TFS) handles most tourist flights to the Canary Islands' largest island. Rental desks are on the arrivals level — Hertz, Europcar, Cicar (Canarian chain), Goldcar, and Autoreisen share the space. Cicar is the Canary Islands' dominant local operator and the best choice for Tenerife — modern fleet, fair pricing, and island-wide offices.

🎯 Quick Tip

Cicar (Canarian car rental chain) consistently beats international brands on price and service in Tenerife. Book directly on cicar.com — they include full insurance with €0 excess, unlimited mileage, and second driver free. Their airport desk also has the shortest queues.

Airport Pickup Tips

TFS rental desks are in the arrivals hall. Present passport, EU license or IDP, credit card. Cicar, Goldcar, and Autoreisen are the busiest. Summer Saturday afternoons (charter landing peak) can produce 25-minute waits. If you've booked with a non-airport operator, their shuttle meets you outside arrivals.

Tenerife's volcanic landscapes include unpaved roads to remote beaches and mountain viewpoints. Check tires (lava rock punctures happen), undercarriage, and the AC. Salt spray from coastal roads corrodes exposed metal — check wheel arches. TFS parking lot has excellent natural light.

For detailed guidance, see our pre-drive checklist.

Explore Tenerife by Car

Tenerife's dramatic volcanic landscape rewards drivers with some of Europe's most spectacular roads. The drive up to Mount Teide through the pine forests is unforgettable, and the northern coast hides lush green valleys.

Getting from Tenerife Airport to the City

TFS is in the south. For Los Cristianos/Playa de las Américas, TF-1 west (15 min). For Santa Cruz (north), TF-1 east then TF-5 (1 hour). For Mount Teide summit, TF-1 to TF-21 (90 min). For Masca Valley, TF-1 west to TF-82 to TF-436 (75 min, spectacular hairpin road). For Puerto de la Cruz (north coast), TF-5 north (1 hour 15 min).

Autoreisen operates from Calle la Castaña, 1 km from TFS, with free shuttle. They're a Tenerife-based company with 30+ years of experience and the best fleet selection for visiting the mountains — their Dacia Duster and Suzuki Vitara are built for Tenerife's terrain.

What to Know Before Driving from TFS

Spain drives on the right. Tenerife motorways (TF-1, TF-5) have 120 km/h limits. Mountain roads to Teide have 40-60 km/h limits. The TF-436 to Masca is one of Europe's most dramatic roads — single lane with blind hairpins and sheer drops. Parking in resort areas: use underground lots (€8-12/day). North coast (Anaga) roads require mountain driving skills.

Tenerife has an excellent motorway system (TF-1 south coast, TF-5 north coast) connecting all resort areas. The TF-21 mountain road to Mount Teide (3,718m) is well-maintained but steep with hairpin turns. Altitude sickness is possible at the summit — watch for symptoms. Fuel up before mountain drives; the only station between the coast and Teide is in Vilaflor.

Fuel Stations Near TFS

Repsol and Cepsa stations are on the TF-1 near TFS. Fuel: unleaded 95 approximately €1.35/L — Canary Islands fuel is significantly cheaper than mainland Spain due to lower tax. The Repsol at the TFS access road is the closest station. Fill up in Vilaflor if heading to Teide — it's the last station before the national park.

Local Driving Tip

The TF-1 motorway connecting the south coast resorts to Santa Cruz is fast and free, but the mountain road through Teide National Park (TF-21) requires careful driving with hairpin turns and occasional cloud cover reducing visibility to near zero.
