Learn from Others' Expensive Errors
Every day, thousands of travelers lose money on avoidable car rental mistakes โ from accepting unnecessary insurance to forgetting about fuel policies. Here are the ten most common (and costly) errors, along with exactly how to dodge each one.
1. Not Comparing Prices Across Platforms
The same car, same dates, same pickup location can vary by 40โ60% between booking platforms. A one-week compact rental in Malaga might be โฌ120 on Localrent, โฌ170 on Economybookings, and โฌ200 booked directly with the rental company. Most travelers just book on the first site they find and never discover they overpaid. Always compare at least three platforms.
2. Accepting Every Insurance at the Counter
The insurance upsell at the desk can add โฌ15โ30 per day. Over two weeks, that's โฌ210โ420 in extra insurance you probably don't need โ especially if your credit card offers CDW coverage. Know your existing coverage before you arrive at the desk. See our insurance guide for details.
3. Ignoring the Fuel Policy
Choosing "Prepaid Fuel" instead of "Full-to-Full" can cost โฌ30โ60 in wasted fuel you've paid for but not used. Even worse: returning a Full-to-Full car without filling up means paying the rental company's inflated fuel rate โ often โฌ3โ4/liter. Always choose Full-to-Full and fill up near the drop-off point.
4. Skipping the Pre-Drive Inspection
Not documenting the car's condition at pickup leaves you vulnerable to damage claims for pre-existing scratches and dents. Take 20+ photos of the entire vehicle before driving off. It takes 5 minutes and can save you hundreds.
5. Driving into a ZTL Zone
In Italy, camera-enforced restricted traffic zones generate fines of โฌ80โ100+ per violation โ and they arrive weeks after your trip. Some travelers have received โฌ500+ in accumulated ZTL fines from a single day in Florence or Rome. Research ZTL zones before driving in any Italian city.
6. Forgetting About Cross-Border Restrictions
Driving to a country not listed on your rental agreement can void your insurance and result in penalties. Always declare your intended route at booking time and verify which countries are permitted.
7. Booking Automatic Too Late in Europe
Automatic cars are limited in European rental fleets and sell out first during peak season. If you need automatic, book 6โ8 weeks ahead for summer travel. Waiting until the last week often means paying double or finding nothing available.
8. Not Checking the Credit Card Hold
The security deposit (โฌ500โ2,000 held on your card) can max out a card with a low credit limit, leaving you without spending power during your trip. Ensure your card has enough available credit to absorb the hold, or bring a second card as backup.
9. Returning Late
Most rental companies give a 29โ59 minute grace period. After that, you're charged for a full extra day at the daily rate (or higher). On the last day, leave extra time for traffic, fuel stops, and the return process itself.
10. Not Reading the Fine Print
Mileage limits, geographic restrictions, additional driver fees, minimum rental age surcharges, and one-way drop-off fees are all in the terms and conditions. The 5 minutes spent reading the booking confirmation could save you โฌ100+ in surprise charges.
Compare Transparent Car Rental Prices
Use platforms that show all fees upfront so you know exactly what you'll pay.
Transparent Pricing on Localrent โThe Golden Rule
Almost every car rental mistake comes down to the same root cause: not preparing before you arrive at the desk. Ten minutes of research before booking, and five minutes of inspection at pickup, prevent 90% of the costly errors listed above. Your future self will thank you.
Consumer dispute data from the European Consumer Centre confirms that insurance upsells and damage claims are the top rental complaints.
