When Car Rental Prices Drop (and Spike)

Car rental pricing in Europe follows predictable seasonal patterns — and understanding them can save you 40–60% compared to peak rates. The difference between renting a compact car in Barcelona in August versus November can be €200+ on a one-week rental. Here's what our pricing data shows for 2026.

The European Pricing Calendar

Peak Season: Late June to Early September

Summer is by far the most expensive time to rent in Europe. Demand surges from holidaymakers, rental fleets are stretched thin, and prices in popular destinations like Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal can double or triple compared to winter rates. Economy cars that cost €15/day in January climb to €40–60/day in August. Booking 6–8 weeks in advance is essential during peak season — last-minute summer bookings face both high prices and limited availability.

Shoulder Season: April–May and September–October

The sweet spot for value. Weather is still excellent in Mediterranean destinations, but rental prices drop 20–40% from peak rates. September is particularly good — summer crowds have thinned, rates have dropped, but the sea is still warm from months of summer heat. Availability is better than summer, and you're less likely to find the specific car you want sold out.

Low Season: November to March

The cheapest period by far. In winter, many tourists stay away from Southern Europe (despite mild weather in the Algarve, Costa del Sol, and Canary Islands), and rental companies slash prices to move inventory. Economy cars start from €8–15/day in Spain and Portugal during winter. The exceptions are ski destinations (the Alps, Dolomites) where winter is peak season and prices reflect demand.

Booking Strategies for the Best Price

Book early for summer, late for winter. For June–August travel, book 6–8 weeks ahead for the best rates and availability. For winter travel, last-minute bookings (1–2 weeks ahead) often yield the lowest prices as companies discount remaining inventory.

Be flexible on pickup location. Airport locations charge a premium (10–15% surcharge). Downtown or suburban offices can be significantly cheaper — sometimes enough to offset the cost of a taxi from the airport.

Consider multi-day discounts. Renting for 7 days is often only marginally more expensive than renting for 5 days. Some providers offer weekly rates that make days 6 and 7 almost free. Always check the per-day rate for different rental lengths before booking.

Compare across at least three platforms. Pricing varies significantly between aggregators. A car that costs €180/week on one site might be €130 on another. Always check Localrent (best for local agencies), Economybookings (widest selection), and QEEQ (competitive on popular routes).
