Renting a Car at Thessaloniki Airport
Last updated: April 2026
Thessaloniki Airport Macedonia (SKG) serves Greece's second city and the gateway to Northern Greece — Macedonia, Thrace, and the Halkidiki peninsula's three-fingered beaches. Rental desks are in the arrivals area — Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and local operator Avance share the space. SKG is less touristic than Athens or Crete, offering better rental rates and lower traffic.
🎯 Quick Tip
Halkidiki's three peninsulas (Kassandra, Sithonia, Athos) each have different characters. Kassandra is developed and family-friendly; Sithonia is wilder with better beaches; Athos (monks' republic) is male-only and requires a special permit. Choose your peninsula before selecting your route.

SKG's rental area is in the arrivals hall — compact and easy to find. Present passport, EU license or IDP, credit card. Greek operators are relaxed — 10 minutes typical. If heading to Halkidiki, confirm the insurance covers gravel beach access roads. If crossing to Bulgaria or North Macedonia, check border crossing permissions.
Northern Greek roads are well-maintained on main routes but deteriorate on Halkidiki beach roads. Check tires (gravel beach roads), mirrors, and bumper corners. SKG cars face winter conditions not common in southern Greece — check the wiper blades and heating if visiting October-April.

Getting from Thessaloniki Airport to the City
SKG is 15 km southeast of Thessaloniki center (20 min). For Halkidiki (Kassandra), take the A25 south (1 hour). For Sithonia, A25 then branch east (1 hour 30 min). For Meteora, A1 south then E92 west (3 hours). For Olympus (Litochoro), A1 south (75 min). For Vergina (Philip of Macedon's tomb), A2 west (1 hour).
Avance operates from the airport road, 1 km from SKG, with free shuttle. They're Northern Greece's most experienced operator and offer one-way drop-offs at other Greek airports. Their SUV fleet is ideal for Halkidiki beach roads.
What to Know Before Driving from SKG
Greece drives on the right. Highway limit: 130 km/h. The A1/E75 is tolled (Thessaloniki-Athens approximately €30). Halkidiki roads are 90 km/h on main routes, 50 km/h in villages. Northern Greece has four distinct seasons — winter roads can be icy, especially toward Meteora and Olympus. Thessaloniki parking: use the underground lots at Aristotelous Square or the waterfront.
SKG connects to the A1/E75 (south to Athens, north to Balkans) and the road to Halkidiki. Thessaloniki's waterfront boulevard (Nikis) is the main orientation road — everything radiates from there. The road to Halkidiki branches at Thermi — follow signs for your specific peninsula. Download offline maps for Sithonia's interior, where coverage drops.
Fuel Stations Near SKG
Shell and BP stations are on the airport road and the A25 toward Halkidiki. Fuel: unleaded approximately €1.85/L. Northern Greece fuel prices are generally 5-10 cents cheaper than the islands. Fill up in Thessaloniki before Halkidiki — Sithonia stations are sparse.
Local Driving Tip
Thessaloniki's waterfront Nikis Avenue is beautiful but perpetually gridlocked — use the inner ring road (Perifereiaki) to cross the city. Parking near the White Tower and Aristotelous Square is metered and enforcement is strict, especially on weekdays.
