Renting a Car at Phuket Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Phuket International Airport (HKT) serves Thailand's most popular island destination. The small terminal has rental desks on the arrivals level — Budget, Thai Rent A Car, and local operators Phuket Car Rent and Drive Car Rental are present. Phuket is 50 km long and hilly, with a surprisingly complex road network. An International Driving Permit is legally required for driving in Thailand.

🎯 Quick Tip

Phuket's hills are steep, roads are winding, and tropical rain creates sudden zero-visibility conditions. Rent a car only if you're an experienced driver comfortable with challenging conditions. For casual beach-hopping, a taxi or Grab ride is safer and cheaper.

Airport Pickup Tips

HKT's arrivals area has rental counters along the exit wall. Present your passport, IDP (mandatory), home license, and credit card. Some Thai operators accept cash deposits. Peak-season (December-January) pickup can take 20 minutes; off-season is instant. Confirm the insurance covers scooter collision damage — scooters on Phuket are unpredictable.

Phuket's hilly roads, tropical rain, and proximity to salt water are hard on vehicles. Check the brakes (steep hills require reliable stopping power), inspect for rust on wheel arches and underbody, and test the AC. Also check the headlights — Phuket's mountain roads are poorly lit and evening rain reduces visibility dramatically.

Explore Phuket by Car

Phuket's hilly terrain and spread-out beaches make a rental car very practical. Drive between the lively Patong, the quieter Kata and Karon beaches, and the Old Town's Sino-Portuguese architecture.

Getting from Phuket Airport to the City

HKT is in the island's north. For Patong Beach, take Route 402 south then Route 4029 west (40 min). For Kata/Karon, continue south on Route 4028 (50 min). For Phuket Town, Route 402 south (30 min). For Cape Panwa (south tip), Route 402 south then Route 4021 (45 min). For Phang Nga Bay (mainland), cross the Sarasin Bridge north (45 min to pier).

Phuket Car Rent operates from Thep Krasattri Road, 2 km from HKT, with free pickup. They offer the best weekly rates on the island and include comprehensive insurance. Their Toyota Yaris Ativ models are popular — small enough for Phuket's tight beach-town streets, with enough trunk space for luggage.

What to Know Before Driving from HKT

Thailand drives on the left. Phuket speed limits: 90 km/h on Route 402, 60 km/h in towns. Hill roads have no posted limits but conditions demand 20-30 km/h. Scooters weave unpredictably — maintain extra following distance. Heavy rain (May-October monsoon) can flood low-lying roads within minutes. Police checkpoints near Patong are frequent on weekend evenings.

Thailand drives on the LEFT. Phuket's main north-south road (Route 402/Thep Krasattri Road) is well-maintained but heavily trafficked. The hillside roads to Kata, Karon, and Patong have steep switchbacks. Test your brakes in the parking lot. Keep headlights on at all times — Phuket mandates this. Download offline maps; coverage drops on the interior mountain roads.

Fuel Stations Near HKT

PTT and Shell stations are on Route 402. Gasohol 95 costs approximately THB 38/L. The closest station to HKT is the PTT 2 km south on Route 402. Fill up before heading to the south of the island — stations in the Rawai/Nai Harn area are limited.

Local Driving Tip

Phuket's coastal roads are dotted with steep hills and blind crests — motorbike accidents involving tourists are extremely common. If you must rent a scooter, an International Driving Permit with motorcycle endorsement is legally required and checked at police roadblocks.
