Renting a Car at Bangkok Airport
Last updated: April 2026
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is Bangkok's main international airport. The car rental center is on Level 1 (Ground Floor) of the passenger terminal β take the elevator down from arrivals (Level 2). Thai Rent-A-Car, Budget, Hertz, and Avis have counters here. Renting a car in Thailand requires either an International Driving Permit or a Thai driving license β your home country license alone is not legally valid.
π― Quick Tip
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory in Thailand β police checkpoints on highways actively check for them, and driving without one voids your insurance completely. Get your IDP before leaving home.

Airport Pickup Tips
From BKK arrivals on Level 2, take the elevator or escalator down to Level 1 (Ground Floor) and follow signs for 'Car Rental.' Counters are on the south side of the building. Present your passport, IDP, home license, and credit card. Deposits range from THB 5,000β15,000 depending on vehicle class. Peak-season waits (DecemberβJanuary) can reach 30 minutes.
Bangkok's traffic means most rental cars have minor scuffs β check carefully under fluorescent lighting on Level 1. Focus on bumpers, mirror caps, and the left side of the vehicle (Thai roads are narrow and left-side scrapes are endemic). Photograph the odometer and fuel gauge alongside your damage record.

Explore Bangkok by Car
While Bangkok itself is best navigated by BTS and taxi, a rental car from Suvarnabhumi airport lets you reach destinations like Ayutthaya's ancient ruins, Kanchanaburi's River Kwai, and Hua Hin's royal beaches.

Getting from Bangkok Airport to the City
BKK is 30 km east of central Bangkok. The airport expressway connects to the city, but traffic jams can stretch the drive to 60β90 minutes during rush hour. For Pattaya, take Motorway 7 east (90 min). For Hua Hin, take the Southern Route via Rama II Road (2.5β3 hours). For Ayutthaya, head north on the Asian Highway (90 min).
Thai Rent-A-Car and local operator CheapCarRent have depots on Bangna-Trad Road, 5 km from BKK. They offer free hotel/airport pickup. These operators are significantly cheaper (30β40% less) than terminal counters and often have newer fleets with full insurance packages included in the base rate.
What to Know Before Driving from BKK
Thailand drives on the left. Highway speed limit is 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on rural highways, and 60 km/h in towns. Motorways 7 (to Pattaya) and 9 (Ring Road) are tolled β carry small bills (THB 20β50) for the toll booths. Dashcams are strongly recommended; if you have an accident, video evidence significantly helps with police reports.
Thailand drives on the LEFT β the same as UK, Japan, and Australia. If you're coming from a right-hand-drive country, concentrate on positioning within the lane. Thai driving style is assertive β motorcycles pass on both sides, and lane markings are treated as suggestions. Avoid driving in Bangkok itself; the car is for escaping the city.
Fuel Stations Near BKK
PTT, Shell, and Bangchak stations surround BKK on all sides. Fuel is government-subsidized: gasohol 95 costs approximately THB 38/L, diesel THB 30/L. The closest 24-hour station to BKK is the PTT on Highway 34 (Bang Na-Trad), 3 km east of the terminal. Always use 'gasohol 95 E10' unless the car specifically requires E20 or E85.
Local Driving Tip
Bangkok's expressway system has both cash and electronic (M-Pass) toll lanes β stay in the cash lane unless your rental has a transponder. The Don Mueang Tollway to the old airport area is the fastest northβsouth route but costs 50β115 baht per trip.
