Renting a Car at Nice Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is France's third-busiest and the gateway to the French Riviera. Rental desks are on the arrivals level of Terminal 2 (most international flights) — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and Enterprise share the space. Terminal 1 (some budget airlines) has a separate rental area. NCE puts you minutes from the Corniche roads, Monaco, Saint-Tropez, and the Provence hinterland.

🎯 Quick Tip

The Grande Corniche, Moyenne Corniche, and Basse Corniche are three parallel roads between Nice and Monaco with breathtaking Mediterranean views. The Grande Corniche (the highest) was featured in the Hitchcock film 'To Catch a Thief' — drive it for the panoramas, but take the Basse Corniche for convenience.

Airport Pickup Tips

In T2, rental desks are on the arrivals level near exit doors. In T1, follow 'Location de Voitures' signs outside the terminal to the rental parking area. Present your passport, EU license or IDP, and credit card. French operators require warning triangle and high-vis vest — verify these. Pickup: 10-15 minutes. Ask about Monaco parking — it's a special situation.

Riviera driving is challenging — narrow hillside roads, hairpin turns, and aggressive local drivers on scooters. Check both mirrors, all bumper corners, and the roof (low tunnel ceilings on some Corniche roads). NCE rental cars often have salt spray corrosion on wheel arches from coastal driving. Check the AC — temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in summer.

Explore Nice by Car

Nice is the gateway to the French Riviera. Drive the legendary Grande Corniche cliffside road to Monaco, explore the hilltop perfume town of Grasse, or head into Provence's lavender fields and wine villages.

Getting from Nice Airport to the City

NCE is 7 km west of Nice center (10 min). For Monaco, A8 east or Corniche roads (20-30 min). For Cannes, A8 west (30 min). For Saint-Tropez, A8 west then D25/D558 (90 min). For Grasse (perfume capital), A8 west then exit 42 (30 min). For the Verdon Gorge, A8 west to Draguignan then D955 (2 hours). For Italy (San Remo), A8 east (45 min).

Rent a Car and Ada have offices on Route de Grenoble in Nice, 3 km from NCE, with free shuttle. They offer budget rates for longer rentals (1 week+). For a premium experience, Sixt at NCE has convertible BMWs and Mercedes available — the quintessential Riviera driving experience.

What to Know Before Driving from NCE

France drives on the right. The A8 autoroute along the Riviera is tolled (Nice to Cannes approximately €4). The Corniche roads are free but slow and winding — allow double the GPS time. Monaco has strict speed limits (30 km/h throughout) and zero tolerance for traffic violations. Nice's Promenade des Anglais is a 50 km/h zone with cameras. Summer parking: arrive before 10 AM or you won't find a spot.

NCE exits onto the Promenade des Anglais (Nice's seafront) and connects to the A8 motorway. The A8 east reaches Monaco in 20 minutes. For Cannes, take the A8 west (30 min). Note: Riviera parking is brutally expensive and scarce — many travelers park at their hotel and use buses or trains along the coast. Monaco has a dedicated car park under Casino Square (€3/hour).

Fuel Stations Near NCE

TotalEnergies and Esso stations are on the Route de Grenoble near NCE and on the A8 service areas. Fuel: SP95-E10 approximately €1.80/L (Riviera prices are 3-5 cents above the national average). The Casino supermarket station in Saint-Laurent-du-Var (5 min from NCE) offers the cheapest fuel in the area. Avoid A8 motorway service stations — they charge 15-20 cents/L above off-motorway prices.

Local Driving Tip

The Promenade des Anglais is a one-way seafront road with speed cameras every 500 metres — stick to 50 km/h. Parking in the old town (Vieux Nice) is limited to the Cours Saleya underground garage, which fills by 10 AM in summer.
