Renting a Car at Marseille Airport
Last updated: April 2026
Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) serves France's second city and the gateway to Provence. Rental desks are on the ground floor of Terminal 1, directly below the arrivals area. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and Budget operate alongside Ada (France's budget chain). MRS is perfectly positioned for exploring the Calanques coast, lavender fields of the Luberon, and the road to the French Riviera.
π― Quick Tip
The drive from MRS to the CΓ΄te d'Azur on the A8 autoroute is beautiful but expensive β tolls total approximately β¬20 to Nice. The alternative D559 coast road is free, spectacular, and 3x slower. Consider the coast road for one direction and the autoroute for the other.

Airport Pickup Tips
From MRS arrivals (Level 0), take the elevator or stairs down to Level -1 where rental desks are located. Present your passport, EU license or IDP, and credit card. Verify the warning triangle and high-vis vest are in the car. Also check for the Crit'Air vignette β Marseille is a low-emission zone during pollution peaks. Pickup: 10-15 minutes.
ProvenΓ§al roads are narrow, lined with stone walls, and popular with fast-moving locals on scooters. Check both sides of the car for scrapes, inspect the mirrors carefully, and look at the lower bumper areas. MRS rental cars often have insect residue on the front from autoroute driving β don't mistake this for paint defects. Check under bright light.
For detailed guidance, see our pre-drive checklist.
Explore Marseille by Car
Marseille sits at the crossroads of Provence and the Mediterranean coast. A rental car lets you explore the turquoise Calanques creeks, drive through fields of lavender in the Luberon, or visit the Roman ruins at Arles.

Getting from Marseille Airport to the City
MRS is 27 km northwest of Marseille center. Take the A7 south then A55 (25 min). For Aix-en-Provence, A51 north (20 min). For Cassis and the Calanques, A52 south then A50 (30 min). For Avignon, A7 north (55 min). For Nice, A8 east (2 hours). For Gordes and the Luberon, A7 north then D900 (75 min). For Arles, A54 west (50 min).
Ada and Rent a Car have offices in Vitrolles, 3 km from MRS, with free shuttle. Ada is France's largest discount chain and offers exceptional weekly rates. For Provence road trips, they rent Peugeot 2008 and 3008 crossovers β comfortable on autoroutes and practical for vineyard tracks.
What to Know Before Driving from MRS
France drives on the right. Autoroute limit is 130 km/h (110 km/h in rain). Marseille's city driving is intense β lanes are narrow, scooters weave aggressively, and the Old Port area is pedestrianized. The Prado-CarΓ©nage tunnel (underwater tunnel) connects Marseille's north and south β tolled at β¬3.00. Parking in the Vieux Port area: use underground car parks (β¬2.50/hour).
MRS exits onto the A7 (north toward Aix-en-Provence) and connects to the A55 (south to Marseille city). For the Calanques, take the A50 toward Cassis β but note the road into the Calanques National Park is restricted in summer (shuttle bus from Cassis required). French mandatory equipment: warning triangle, high-vis vest.
Fuel Stations Near MRS
TotalEnergies and Esso stations are on the A7 near MRS and in Vitrolles. Fuel: SP95-E10 approximately β¬1.75/L, Diesel β¬1.70/L. The Carrefour hypermarket in Vitrolles (5 min from MRS) offers fuel 8-10 cents cheaper than autoroute stations. Never fill up at autoroute rest-stop stations β they charge 15-20 cents/L more than off-motorway stations.
Local Driving Tip
The Vieux-Port area is an environmental zone β only electric vehicles and residents can enter. Park at the Joliette underground garage near the Mucem museum and walk. The Corniche Kennedy coastal road is scenic but extremely narrow with no stopping.
