Renting a Car at Naples Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Naples International Airport Capodichino (NAP) is a compact single-terminal airport just 6 km from the city center. Rental desks are on the arrivals level — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and Italian operators Maggiore, Sicily by Car (which also covers southern Italy), and Locauto are present. NAP is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Sorrento, and the islands of Capri and Ischia.

🎯 Quick Tip

Do NOT try to drive the Amalfi Coast road (SS163) in a large car — the road is barely two lanes wide, with hairpin turns, sheer drops, and oncoming buses. Book the smallest car available — a Fiat 500 or Panda is ideal. Seriously, size matters on the Amalfi Coast.

Airport Pickup Tips

NAP's rental desks are 1 minute from the arrivals exit. Present your passport, EU license or IDP, and credit card. Neapolitan operators are characteristically friendly but may try to upsell insurance aggressively — stand firm if you have travel insurance covering the excess. Pickup: 10-15 minutes. Ask for a detailed ZTL map covering Naples, Sorrento, and Amalfi Coast towns.

Naples driving is famously chaotic — rental cars bear the marks. Check for dents on every panel, scrapes on mirrors and bumpers, and scooter-contact marks on the sides. Neapolitan speed bumps are aggressive — check the undercarriage and exhaust pipe. Also verify the stereo works — you'll want music for the stunning Amalfi Coast drive.

Explore Naples by Car

Naples is the launchpad for one of the world's most famous drives — the Amalfi Coast. From Sorrento to Positano and Ravello, the winding SS163 clings to cliffs above the turquoise Mediterranean.

Getting from Naples Airport to the City

NAP is 6 km from Naples center (15-30 min depending on traffic). For Pompeii, take the A3 southeast (30 min). For Sorrento, A3 then SS145 (55 min). For the Amalfi Coast (Positano), take the A3 to Vietri then SS163 (90 min). For Caserta (Royal Palace), take the A1 north (25 min). For Rome, A1 north (2.5 hours).

Locauto and Noleggiare have depots on Via Scarfoglio, 2 km from NAP, with free shuttle. Locauto is an Italian chain with newer fleets than many international brands at NAP and includes roadside assistance. Their Fiat 500 and Panda models are specifically popular for Amalfi Coast trips.

What to Know Before Driving from NAP

Italy drives on the right. The A3 autostrada south from Naples is toll-free to Salerno. The Amalfi Coast road SS163 has no speed limit signs — effective limit is 30-40 km/h due to road width. ZTL zones in Naples center, Sorrento, Ravello, and Positano are camera-enforced. Parking in Sorrento: use the underground Corso Italia car park (€20/day). Never leave valuables visible in Naples.

Driving in Naples requires nerves of steel — local rules are suggestions, scooters swarm from every direction, and double-parking is an art form. If you're not confident, consider taking the train to Sorrento and renting a car there instead. If you do drive from NAP, GPS to the Tangenziale (ring road) and exit at your destination — avoid the city center entirely.

Fuel Stations Near NAP

ENI and IP stations are on the Tangenziale near NAP and on the A3 motorway. Fuel: unleaded approximately €1.85/L, diesel €1.75/L. The closest station to NAP is the ENI on Viale Umberto Maddalena, 500m from the terminal. Fill up before the Amalfi Coast — the only station on the SS163 between Vietri and Positano charges €0.15-0.20/L above average.

Local Driving Tip

Neapolitan drivers treat lane markings as suggestions — expect scooters passing on both sides and aggressive merging. The Tangenziale ring road is a toll road (€1–2 per section) but dramatically faster than surface streets through the city.
