Renting a Car at Milan Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is Italy's second-busiest and serves both Terminal 1 (international) and Terminal 2 (budget airlines). Rental desks in T1 are on the arrivals level near Exit 5; T2 has a smaller selection near the arrivals exit. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and Italian chains Maggiore and Italy by Car are present. MXP is the gateway to the Italian Lakes, the Alps, and Tuscany.

🎯 Quick Tip

Milan has a strict Area C congestion charge (€7.50/day) covering the entire city center, enforced by cameras. If your hotel is inside the Area C boundary, call them for instructions on registering your plate. Better yet, park outside and use the Metro.

Airport Pickup Tips

In T1, follow 'Autonoleggio/Car Rental' signs to the ground floor near Exit 5 — a 3-minute walk from customs. Present your passport, EU license or IDP, and credit card. Italian operators require the credit card in the main driver's name. Verify the car has a Telepass for autostrada tolls. Pickup: 15-20 minutes.

Lombardy roads are well-maintained but Milan's city traffic creates parking damage. Check all four doors for dings, inspect bumper corners, and verify the wheel rims. MXP fleet cars drive significant autostrada miles — check the front bumper for stone chips and the windscreen for micro-cracks. Note the fuel level precisely — Italian operators charge hefty fees for fuel discrepancies.
