Renting a Car at Marrakech Airport
Last updated: 30 July 2026
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is Morocco's second-busiest airport, handling primarily European tourists. The small terminal has rental desks in the arrivals hall — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and local operators Medocar and Afriloc compete. RAK is the starting point for spectacular drives: the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Benhaddou (Game of Thrones filming location), and the Sahara Desert edge at Merzouga.
🎯 Quick Tip
For the Atlas Mountain passes and desert roads, rent an SUV — not a compact. The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) has hairpin turns, loose gravel shoulders, and occasional rockfalls. A higher driving position and all-wheel drive make the difference between anxiety and enjoyment.

Check RAK PricesIn-Terminal Desks vs Off-Airport Shuttle Lots at RAK
Not every "Marrakech Airport" rental actually starts inside the terminal. International brands including Sixt, Budget, Europcar and Hertz keep desks in the arrivals hall, with cars parked within walking distance. Other operators — Alamo and Enterprise among them — work from off-airport facilities a few minutes away and send a shuttle or a driver holding a name board to meet you outside the terminal.
The distinction matters most for late arrivals: at the off-airport lots, after-hours pickup typically runs only until around 10pm, requires roughly 24 hours' notice with your flight number, and carries a fee in the region of 400 MAD. In-terminal desks are the safer bet for evening flights. When comparing prices, check the pickup type on the voucher — a slightly cheaper shuttle-lot rate can cost you 30–40 minutes on arrival.
Requirements are consistent across desks: a licence held for at least a year, your passport, and a credit card in the lead driver's name for the deposit. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly 130 MAD per day where they're accepted at all — several operators set the minimum at 25.
Airport Pickup Tips
RAK's arrivals area is compact — rental desks are 30 seconds from customs exit. Present your passport, IDP (recommended for Morocco), and credit card. Moroccan operators may accept cash deposits. The queue is minimal off-season; summer and Christmas/New Year can take 20 minutes. Ask about mileage limits — some Moroccan operators cap daily kilometers.
Moroccan roads outside cities are demanding — check all tires carefully (including sidewalls and spare), test the suspension by bouncing each corner, and verify the AC compressor under load. Desert dust enters every crevice — don't mistake sand residue for paint damage. Test the headlights — you'll need them in Atlas Mountain tunnels and for night driving.
Explore Marrakech by Car
Marrakech is the base for Morocco's most dramatic drive — crossing the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n'Tichka pass to reach the Sahara Desert. Ait Benhaddou's kasbahs and the Dadès Gorges await.

Hotels near Marrakech Airport
Landing late or returning the car before an early flight? The map below compares live hotel prices around Marrakech Airport and nearby areas — handy for the night before pickup or drop-off:
Getting from Marrakech Airport to the City
RAK is 6 km southwest of Marrakech center (15 min). For Essaouira (Atlantic coast), take the N8 west (2.5 hours). For Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou, take the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (4 hours). For the Sahara (Merzouga), continue past Ouarzazate on the N10 (8 hours from Marrakech). For Casablanca, take the A7 autoroute north (2.5 hours). For Fès, A7 north then A2 (5 hours).
Medocar has a depot on Route de l'Aéroport, 2 km from RAK, with free transfers. They specialize in SUVs for Atlas/Sahara trips and offer multi-city drop-off (Marrakech to Fès) at reasonable surcharges. Their vehicles include mandatory equipment for desert driving: tow rope, shovel, and extra water container.
What to Know Before Driving from RAK
Morocco drives on the right. Autoroute limit is 120 km/h, rural roads 100 km/h, urban areas 60 km/h. Speed cameras and police radar traps are common on the N8 and N9. The Tizi n'Tichka pass road has a 60 km/h limit. Mountain overtaking is dangerous — wait for straight sections. Parking in Marrakech: use the guarded lots near Djemaa el-Fna (MAD 20-30/day).
Download offline Google Maps for all of Morocco before leaving — cell coverage drops completely in the Atlas Mountains and Sahara. Carry at least 2 liters of drinking water in the car. The Tizi n'Tichka pass road (N9) is well-maintained but narrow — honk before blind corners. Watch for donkeys, goats, and pedestrians on mountain roads.
Fuel Stations Near RAK
Afriquia and Shell stations are on the Route de l'Aéroport and the N8 outside Marrakech. Fuel: petrol approximately MAD 13.50/L, diesel MAD 11.50/L. Fill up in Marrakech before heading to the Atlas Mountains — the next reliable station after Marrakech on the N9 is in Ouarzazate (190 km). Mountain village stations may run dry in summer.
Local Driving Tip
GPS navigation is unreliable inside Marrakech's medina — streets are too narrow for cars and change names constantly. Park at the large lot near Koutoubia Mosque and explore on foot. The road to Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka pass is spectacular but demanding.
Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Local Desks at Marrakech Airport
All the big international brands operate desks at RAK arrivals: Avis Marrakech airport and Europcar Marrakech airport desks sit alongside Hertz, Sixt and Budget, plus a row of Moroccan local companies. The international brands offer newer fleets and easier dispute resolution, but their walk-up rates run high. Booking the same Avis or Europcar car through a comparison broker is usually 20-40% cheaper than the counter price, and local suppliers booked through Localrent-style platforms often undercut everyone — just check the deposit and excess terms carefully, as local desks in Morocco commonly ask for cash deposits.Whichever route you choose, every Marrakech airport car rental desk and broker pickup point is signposted from arrivals, and arranging car hire in Marrakech airport ahead of time beats negotiating a Marrakech car hire airport walk-up rate on the spot.
