Renting a Car at Casablanca Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) is Morocco's busiest airport, located 33 km south of Casablanca. Rental desks are in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1 โ€” Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and local operator Medocar share the space. Morocco is excellent for self-drive exploration, but the driving culture is dramatically different from Europe โ€” prepare for an adjustment period.

๐ŸŽฏ Quick Tip

Carry cash (Moroccan dirhams) for toll booths โ€” the Casablanca-Rabat and Casablanca-Marrakech autoroutes are tolled, and not all booths accept cards. Exchange at the airport or withdraw from ATMs in the arrivals hall before picking up your car.

Airport Pickup Tips

CMN's Terminal 1 rental desks are to the right after exiting customs. Present your passport, international driving license, and credit card. An IDP is technically required in Morocco โ€” police occasionally request it at checkpoints. The credit card hold is typically MAD 3,000โ€“5,000. Off-season pickup takes 15 minutes; summer can stretch to 30.

Moroccan roads have significant hazards โ€” donkey carts, pedestrians on highways, and variable road surfaces. Check your tires thoroughly (including the spare), test the horn (you'll use it constantly), and verify the windscreen washer works. Dust coating from rural Moroccan roads dramatically reduces visibility and washer fluid depletes fast.

Casablanca's Mohammed V airport is Morocco's main international hub. Drive south to the wind-swept surfing town of Essaouira, or north to the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains.

Getting from Casablanca Airport to the City

CMN is 33 km south of Casablanca. Take the A7 autoroute north โ€” 30 minutes to the city center (toll MAD 20). For Rabat, continue north on the A1 (1 hour, toll MAD 50). For Marrakech, take the A7 south (2.5 hours, toll MAD 90). For Fรจs, take the A2 via Rabat (3.5 hours). For Chefchaouen, head to Tangier then inland (5 hours).

Medocar and Afriloc have depots in the town of Nouasseur, 5 km from CMN. They provide free airport transfers and specialize in SUVs suitable for Morocco's varied terrain. Rates are 25โ€“35% below terminal operators, and they're more flexible with drop-off locations across Morocco.

What to Know Before Driving from CMN

Morocco drives on the right. Autoroute speed limit is 120 km/h, rural roads 100 km/h, urban areas 60 km/h, and 40 km/h in villages. Police speed traps are frequent โ€” carry your license and rental documents at all times. Moroccan autoroutes are modern and well-maintained; secondary roads (routes nationales) vary dramatically in quality. Overtaking on blind curves is common practice by local drivers โ€” stay alert.

Download offline maps before leaving the airport โ€” mobile coverage drops significantly outside major cities. Set your GPS to avoid dirt roads unless you have an SUV. Moroccan road signs are in Arabic and French; basic French highway vocabulary (sortie = exit, pรฉage = toll) is essential. Keep your headlights on outside cities โ€” locals don't always signal.

Fuel Stations Near CMN

Afriquia and Shell stations are on the A7 autoroute near CMN. Fuel prices: petrol approximately MAD 13.50/L, diesel MAD 11.50/L. The closest station to CMN is the Afriquia on the N1 highway, 3 km from the terminal. Fill up before heading to rural areas โ€” stations in the Atlas Mountains can be 60+ km apart.

Local Driving Tip

Casablanca's autoroute to Marrakech (A7) is well-paved and costs about 140 MAD in tolls for the 2.5-hour drive. Avoid the N1 through Settat โ€” it's slower, rougher, and has heavy truck traffic with limited overtaking opportunities.
