Renting a Car at Izmir Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) serves Turkey's third-largest city and the Aegean coast. Rental desks are in the domestic terminal arrivals hall (a 5-minute walk from international arrivals). Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, and local operator Circular share the space. ADB is the starting point for exploring Ephesus, Pamukkale, and the Aegean coast's charming resort towns.

🎯 Quick Tip

If you're heading to Çeşme or Alaçatı (Turkey's wind-surfing capital), book early in summer — the 80 km stretch from ADB to Çeşme is one of Turkey's most popular weekend drives, and rental availability drops sharply on Thursday-Friday.

Airport Pickup Tips

International arrivals at ADB exit into the domestic terminal area where rental desks are located. Follow signs for 'Araç Kiralama/Car Rental.' Present your passport, license, and credit card. Turkish operators are casual — 10 minutes typical. Confirm your insurance covers the gravel roads to Pamukkale's travertines; some basic policies exclude unpaved surfaces.

ADB-based rentals serve the Aegean coast, where narrow village roads and steep hillside parking are common. Check mirrors, bumper corners, and the undercarriage. Salt air corrodes exposed metal — look for rust spots under the door sills. Video-record your walkaround for dispute protection.

Explore Izmir by Car

Izmir is the gateway to western Turkey's rich archaeological heritage. Drive south to the ancient city of Ephesus, the travertine terraces of Pamukkale, and the picturesque hilltop village of Şirince.

Getting from Izmir Airport to the City

ADB is 18 km south of İzmir center. Take the O-32 north (20 min). For Çeşme/Alaçatı, take the O-32 west (55 min). For Ephesus/Selçuk, take the O-32 south to D550 (50 min). For Kuşadası, continue past Selçuk (70 min). For Pamukkale, take the E87/D320 inland (3 hours). For Bodrum, take the D525 south via Aydın (3 hours).

Circular and Payless operate from Gaziemir, 3 km from ADB, with free shuttle. Circular is an Izmir-based Turkish chain with modern Renault and Fiat fleets. Their weekly rates include full CDW with zero excess — a deal that international brands charge €8-15/day extra for.

What to Know Before Driving from ADB

Turkey drives on the right. The O-32 motorway is modern and fast (120 km/h limit). Coast roads to Çeşme are well-maintained. Inland roads toward Pamukkale deteriorate significantly — the last 20 km to the travertines pass through agricultural land with slow tractors and livestock. İzmir city traffic is heavy but more orderly than Istanbul.

Verify the HGS toll device is active before leaving — the O-32 İzmir-Çeşme motorway and the İzmir bay crossing (Otoyol) require electronic tolling. Also note that İzmir has a growing ZTL-style restricted zone in the Konak district — check with the desk agent before driving into the historic center.

Fuel Stations Near ADB

Opet and BP stations are on the O-32 near ADB. Fuel: approximately TRY 42/L for petrol, TRY 40/L for diesel. The Opet at the ADB exit is the closest station. Fuel prices are uniform across Turkey (government-regulated) but occasionally a few kuruş cheaper at Petrol Ofisi stations.

Local Driving Tip

İzmir's coastal Kordon road is pleasant but slow — use the Konak tunnel and Altınyol expressway to cross the city quickly. Parking near the Kemeraltı bazaar is chaotic; use the Alsancak train station garage instead.
