Renting a Car at Istanbul Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Istanbul Airport (IST) is Turkey's mega-hub, one of the world's largest airports, opened in 2018 on the European side of Istanbul. The car rental center occupies a dedicated floor in the multi-story car park — take the elevator from the arrivals hall. Enterprise, Sixt, Europcar, and Turkish operators Garenta and Budget Turkey all have desks. Note: driving in Istanbul itself is chaotic — the car is best used for escaping the city.

🎯 Quick Tip

Rent the car only for the days you're leaving Istanbul — don't keep it parked while sightseeing. Istanbul traffic is legendarily congested, parking is near-impossible in Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu, and public transit (metro, ferry, tram) covers the city far better than a car.

Airport Pickup Tips

IST is enormous — follow signs carefully to 'Rent-a-Car' in the underground car park (Level -2). The walk from arrivals takes 10 minutes. Present your passport, license, and credit card. Turkish operators accept international licenses without IDP, but carrying one is wise. The deposit is typically TRY 5,000-15,000. Expect 15-20 minutes for pickup.

Istanbul's traffic leaves its mark — check all bumpers, mirrors, and door edges for contact damage. Focus on the left side (Turkish roads have narrow stone walls and barriers on the right). Verify the HGS toll transponder is active — Turkey's intercity roads use electronic tolling. Test the AC thoroughly — summers are hot and humid.

Explore Istanbul by Car

Istanbul's new mega-airport is a major rental hub. While the city center is best explored without a car, driving lets you reach the Black Sea coast, the Princes' Islands ferry, Gallipoli, and Troy.

Getting from Istanbul Airport to the City

IST is 35 km northwest of Istanbul center — 45-90 minutes depending on traffic (rush hour is brutal). For Edirne and the Greek/Bulgarian border, take the E80 west (2.5 hours). For Bursa, cross the Osmangazi Bridge on the E80 south (2 hours). For Ankara, take the O-4 east (4.5 hours). For Cappadocia, fly or budget 7+ hours of driving via Ankara.

Garenta has a depot in Arnavutköy, 10 km from IST, with free shuttle service. They offer the best rates for one-way rentals between Istanbul and Antalya — a popular route for tourists combining the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Their fleet includes modern Renault and Fiat models.

What to Know Before Driving from IST

Turkey drives on the right. Motorway limit is 120 km/h, rural roads 90 km/h, urban areas 50 km/h. Istanbul's ring roads (TEM/O-4 and E-5/D100) are permanently congested. Avoid driving within the city — use the car only for intercity travel. Turkish drivers are aggressive but predictable — they'll flash headlights when overtaking. Yield to the flash.

Before leaving IST, confirm the HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) toll device is loaded and active. Without it, you cannot use the Osmangazi Bridge, intercity motorways, or the Bosphorus bridges. IST sits on the European side — if heading to Asian Turkey (Cappadocia, Antalya coast), you'll cross the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge or take the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.

Fuel Stations Near IST

Shell, Opet, and Petrol Ofisi stations are on the motorway near IST. Turkey has expensive fuel: approximately TRY 42/L for petrol. The Opet station on the IST access road is the closest. Diesel (Motorin) is slightly cheaper and many Turkish rental cars are diesel — check the fuel cap sticker carefully to avoid misfueling.

Local Driving Tip

Avoid driving across the Bosphorus bridges during rush hour — the 15 July Martyrs Bridge can take 90 minutes to cross. The Osmangazi Bridge south of the city costs 400+ TL but cuts the Istanbul–Bursa drive from 3 hours to 45 minutes.
