Malaga to Gibraltar: Spain's Sunny Southern Coast

The Costa del Sol stretches along Andalusia's Mediterranean coast from Malaga to the Rock of Gibraltar — roughly 130 km of coastline dotted with resort towns, fishing villages, and some of Spain's most popular beaches. While you could drive it in under two hours, this road trip deserves at least 3–4 days to explore properly.

Getting Your Rental Car

Pick up your car at Malaga Airport (AGP), which has one of Spain's most competitive car rental markets — expect economy cars from €15–25/day in shoulder season. We recommend comparing prices on Localrent (often cheapest for local agencies) and Economybookings (widest selection of international brands). Book automatic specifically if needed — manual is the default in Spain.

The Route

Day 1: Malaga (0 km)

Start by exploring Malaga itself. The city has reinvented itself with world-class museums (the Pompidou Centre, Picasso Museum), a revitalized port area, and excellent tapas bars in the historic center. If you arrive in the afternoon, check into your accommodation and explore the city on foot — save the driving for tomorrow.

Day 2: Malaga → Marbella → Estepona (80 km)

Take the AP-7 motorway (toll) or the free A-7 coastal road west. Stop in Fuengirola for a morning coffee at the seafront promenade, then continue to Marbella. Explore the charming Old Town (Casco Antiguo) with its orange tree-lined Plaza de los Naranjos. After lunch, drive to Puerto Banús if you want to see the glitzy marina, or head straight to the whitewashed town of Estepona for a more authentic experience.

Day 3: Estepona → Ronda Day Trip (100 km round trip)

Today's highlight is the inland detour to Ronda via the A-397 mountain road — one of Andalusia's most spectacular drives. The road climbs through pine forests before emerging onto the meseta where Ronda perches dramatically over the El Tajo gorge. Visit the Puente Nuevo bridge, the oldest bullring in Spain, and have lunch with gorge views. Return to the coast via the same route or loop back through Gaucín for variety.

Day 4: Estepona → Tarifa → Gibraltar (90 km)

Drive south through Sotogrande and along the increasingly wild coastline to Tarifa — Europe's southernmost point and a world-class windsurfing destination. On clear days, you can see Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. Continue east to La Línea de la Concepción and walk across the border to Gibraltar for an afternoon exploring the Rock, its famous Barbary macaques, and the Europa Point lighthouse.

Practical Information

Best time to drive: April–June and September–October offer warm weather without peak season crowds and prices. July–August is hot (35°C+) and very busy.

Tolls: The AP-7 motorway has tolls of approximately €8–12 for the full Malaga to Algeciras stretch. The parallel A-7 is free but slower and passes through towns.

Parking: Street parking in Marbella's Old Town and Ronda is limited. Use paid parking garages (€1–2/hour) to avoid fines. Estepona has more free parking available.

Fuel: Fill up in Malaga or Estepona for the best prices. Stations near tourist hotspots and airports charge a premium.

Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on secondary roads, 50 km/h in towns. Speed cameras are common on the AP-7.
