Renting a Car at Queenstown Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Queenstown Airport (ZQN) has one of the world's most dramatic approaches — landing between the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. Rental desks are in the tiny terminal building — Hertz, Avis, Budget, and NZ operator Apex share the space. Queenstown is the South Island's adventure capital, and a car unlocks Milford Sound, the Crown Range, and Central Otago's wine country.

🎯 Quick Tip

The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound (Te Anau route) takes 4 hours each way — don't underestimate this. Start before 7 AM to allow time for the many stunning photo stops (Mirror Lakes, Homer Tunnel, the Chasm). Book a boat cruise in advance for your arrival time.

Airport Pickup Tips

ZQN is tiny — rental desks are visible from the arrivals door. Present your passport, home license (NZ accepts most for up to 12 months), and credit card. NZ operators are friendly and unhurried — 10-15 minutes. If heading to Milford Sound, ask about chain requirements — the Homer Tunnel approach requires chains in winter (June-September).

NZ South Island roads are gravel-heavy outside main highways. Check the windscreen for stone chips (the most common damage claim in NZ), inspect the undercarriage, and verify the spare tire. If renting a 4WD for ski field access, check the chains are in the trunk and you know how to fit them.

For detailed guidance, see our pre-drive checklist.

Getting from Queenstown Airport to the City

ZQN is 7 km from Queenstown center (10 min). For Wanaka, take the Crown Range Road (55 min) or the longer but easier Kawarau Gorge route via SH6 (70 min). For Te Anau (Milford Sound gateway), SH6 south then SH97 (2 hours). For Milford Sound, continue from Te Anau on SH94 (another 2 hours). For Arrowtown, SH6 east (20 min). For Dunedin, SH6/SH8 (3.5 hours).

Apex Rentals has a depot on Industrial Place, 1 km from ZQN. They specialize in South Island road trip packages with unlimited mileage, free GPS, and optional camping equipment add-ons. Their Toyota RAV4 is the most popular choice for Queenstown visitors.

What to Know Before Driving from ZQN

NZ drives on the left. Speed limits: 100 km/h on open roads, 50 km/h in towns. Queenstown-area roads are scenic but demanding — the Crown Range has hairpin turns with no barriers, and the Milford Road crosses the Homer Tunnel (single-lane, traffic-light controlled). Give way to traffic from the right at unmarked intersections. Carry chains June-September for mountain roads.

New Zealand drives on the LEFT. Queenstown's roads are narrow and shared with tourist traffic. The Crown Range Road to Wanaka is NZ's highest sealed road (1,076m) — steep, winding, and icy in winter. Test your brakes and check the fuel gauge before departing. Download offline maps; coverage drops on the road to Milford Sound.

Fuel Stations Near ZQN

Z Energy and BP stations are on Frankton Road between ZQN and Queenstown center. NZ fuel: 91 octane approximately NZ$2.90/L. Fill up in Queenstown or Te Anau before Milford Sound — there are no fuel stations on the 120 km stretch between Te Anau and Milford. Te Anau fuel is 10-15 cents/L more than Queenstown.

Local Driving Tip

The Crown Range road from Queenstown to Wanaka is New Zealand's highest sealed road — chains are required in winter and the descent has switchbacks with 180-degree turns. The alternative Kawarau Gorge route adds 20 minutes but is far less white-knuckle.
