Renting a Car at Porto Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Porto Airport (OPO) is Portugal's second-busiest, serving the north and the Douro Valley wine country. Rental desks are on the arrivals level — Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Sixt, and Portuguese chain Guerin share the counters. OPO is the gateway to the Douro Valley (UNESCO World Heritage), the Minho region (vinho verde country), and Spain's Galicia across the border.

🎯 Quick Tip

Set up Via Verde electronic tolling at the airport desk before driving. Portugal's motorways use camera-based tolling with no booths on the A41 and A4 near Porto — without registration, fines accumulate quickly.

Airport Pickup Tips

OPO rental desks are in the arrivals hall, to the left after customs. Present your passport, EU license or IDP, and credit card. Critical: visit the Via Verde Easy Toll desk (near rental counters) to activate electronic toll registration. Portuguese operators are efficient — 10-15 minutes total including toll setup.

Portuguese roads are generally good, but the Douro Valley roads are narrow and winding with stone walls. Check mirrors, bumper corners, and wheel rims. OPO cars are parked in an outdoor lot — good lighting for inspection. Verify the spare tire condition; the Douro Valley's mountain roads are remote.

Explore Porto by Car

Porto is the starting point for exploring northern Portugal's Douro Valley wine region, one of Europe's most scenic drives. The terraced vineyards cascading down to the river are spectacular from October through November.

Getting from Porto Airport to the City

OPO is 11 km north of Porto center (15 min). For the Douro Valley (Peso da Régua), take the A4 east (90 min). For Braga, A3 north (40 min). For Guimarães, A3 north then A7 (45 min). For Viana do Castelo, A28 north (50 min). For Lisbon, A1 south (3 hours). For Santiago de Compostela (Spain), A3/AP-9 north (2.5 hours).

Guerin has a depot on Rua de Pedras Rubras, 1 km from OPO, with free shuttle. Guerin includes Via Verde toll registration free with every booking — saving you the setup time. Their fleet includes diesel Peugeots ideal for the hilly Douro Valley roads.

What to Know Before Driving from OPO

Portugal drives on the right. Motorway limit is 120 km/h, rural 90 km/h, urban 50 km/h. The A4 to the Douro Valley is tolled (€4-6 to Peso da Régua). Porto's Ponte Luís I bridge is iconic but terrifying to drive across — use the upper deck for views and the lower deck for city access. Portuguese roundabouts are everywhere — give way to traffic already circulating.

OPO connects to the A1 (south to Lisbon), A3 (north to Braga/Spain), and A4 (east to the Douro Valley). Porto's city center is difficult to drive in — steep, narrow, one-way streets and aggressive parking. Park at the Trindade or Lapa car parks and walk. Save the car for excursions outside the city.

Fuel Stations Near OPO

Galp and Repsol stations are on the A4/EN208 near OPO. Fuel: unleaded 95 approximately €1.65/L, diesel €1.55/L. The Continente hypermarket station in Maia (5 min from OPO) offers the cheapest fuel in the area. Fill up before the Douro Valley — mountain stations are sparse and close early.

Local Driving Tip

Porto's Ribeira waterfront streets are cobbled, steep, and one-way in confusing patterns — park at the Trindade garage near Clérigos Tower. The A3 motorway north to Braga and the Minho wine region is a smooth 45-minute toll road.
