Renting a Car at Playa del Carmen Airport
Last updated: April 2026
Playa del Carmen is served by Cancún International Airport (CUN), 55 km to the north. Most visitors rent directly at CUN (see the Cancún airport page for terminal details) and drive south on Highway 307. However, several operators also have offices in Playa del Carmen's town center on Avenida Constituyentes — useful if you only need a car for day trips rather than the entire stay.
🎯 Quick Tip
If you're staying in Playa del Carmen and only need a car for day trips (Tulum ruins, cenotes, Cobá), rent from a Playa-based office rather than CUN airport. You avoid the airport surcharge and can walk to pickup. City Car has an office on Constituyentes and 30th Avenue.

Check CUN PricesAirport Pickup Tips
If renting at CUN, follow standard Cancún pickup procedures (Terminal 2, 3, or 4). If renting in Playa del Carmen, operators on Avenida Constituyentes and 5th Avenue offer walk-in service — present passport, license, and credit card. Playa operators are casual and fast — 5-10 minutes. Negotiate insurance inclusion at Playa offices; they're more flexible than CUN desks.
Yucatán Peninsula conditions are harsh — strong UV, tropical rain, and unpaved cenote access roads. Check the tires (sidewall damage from rocky cenote parking areas is common), test the AC, and inspect the undercarriage. If the previous renter visited cenotes, check for mud and limestone residue that might hide scratches.
Explore Playa del Carmen by Car
While served by Cancún airport, Playa del Carmen is the hippier alternative base for Yucatán exploration. Drive south along the Riviera Maya to Tulum's clifftop ruins, Sian Ka'an biosphere, and hidden cenotes.

Getting from Playa del Carmen Airport to the City
Playa del Carmen is 55 km south of CUN on Highway 307 (50 min). For Tulum, continue south on 307 (1 hour from Playa). For Cobá ruins, take the 307 south to Tulum then inland road (2 hours from Playa). For Valladolid and Chichén Itzá, take the inland toll road (Cuota) from 307 (2.5 hours). For Xcaret park, it's 7 km south of Playa on the 307.
City Car Rental operates from Playa del Carmen center (Avenida Constituyentes) with no airport surcharge. For CUN-based rentals, NÜ Car Rentals in the Aeropuerto Industrial zone is 35% cheaper than terminal desks and offers free shuttle from CUN. Both include Mexican liability insurance.
What to Know Before Driving from CUN
Mexico drives on the right. The 307 highway is the Riviera Maya's spine — it's well-maintained and well-lit. Topes (speed bumps) are the biggest hazard — they're often unmarked and tall enough to damage low-clearance vehicles at speed. Military checkpoints between Playa and Tulum are routine — have documents ready. Parking in Playa center is scarce — use the lot on Juárez Avenue.
Highway 307 between CUN and Playa del Carmen is a well-maintained divided highway. Speed limit is 80-110 km/h. Watch for speed bumps (topes) at every town entrance. The road to Cobá ruins branches inland at Tulum — it's well-paved but remote. Cell coverage is reliable on the 307 but drops toward Cobá and Sian Ka'an biosphere.
Fuel Stations Near CUN
Pemex stations are on Highway 307 at regular intervals. Fuel: Magna approximately MXN 23/L. The Pemex at the Playa del Carmen bypass is the most convenient. Watch the pump reset before fueling. If heading to Cobá, top up in Tulum — the inland road has no stations for 40 km.
Local Driving Tip
The highway between Cancún airport and Playa del Carmen has two options: the free carretera federal (45 min, speed bumps at every village) or the cuota toll road (30 min, 300+ MXN). The toll road is worth every peso for the smoother, safer drive.
