Renting a Car at Munich Airport
Last updated: April 2026
Munich Airport (MUC) is Germany's second-busiest and Bavaria's gateway. The rental car center is in the Schwaiger Parking building between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 β follow the blue signs and covered walkways from either terminal. All global brands (Sixt headquarters is literally in Munich), Europcar, Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise compete. MUC is the starting point for the Romantic Road, Bavarian Alps, and Austrian adventures.
π― Quick Tip
Sixt was founded in Munich and their MUC fleet is enormous β they often offer the best deals on premium German cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi). If you want to experience a German performance car on the Autobahn, Sixt at MUC is the place.

Airport Pickup Tips
Follow blue 'Mietwagen/Car Rental' signs from Terminal 1 or 2 to the Schwaiger building β a 5-7 minute walk. Desks are organized by brand in a modern hall. Present your passport, license, and credit card. Munich pickup is German-efficient: 10-12 minutes. If heading to Austria, confirm the Vignette (Austrian motorway sticker) is included β without it, you'll be fined at the border.
Bavarian roads are among Europe's best-maintained, and MUC fleet cars are typically in excellent condition. Still, check the usual areas: bumper corners, wheel rims, and windscreen. Autobahn stone chips are the most common pre-existing damage. Note the fuel type carefully β German fleets include a mix of petrol, diesel, and increasingly, plug-in hybrids.
