Renting a Car at Munich Airport

Last updated: 30 July 2026

Munich Airport (MUC) is Germany's second-busiest and Bavaria's gateway. The rental car center is in the Schwaiger Parking building between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 — follow the blue signs and covered walkways from either terminal. All global brands (Sixt headquarters is literally in Munich), Europcar, Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise compete. MUC is the starting point for the Romantic Road, Bavarian Alps, and Austrian adventures.

🎯 Quick Tip

Sixt was founded in Munich and their MUC fleet is enormous — they often offer the best deals on premium German cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi). If you want to experience a German performance car on the Autobahn, Sixt at MUC is the place.

Airport Pickup Tips

Follow blue 'Mietwagen/Car Rental' signs from Terminal 1 or 2 to the Schwaiger building — a 5-7 minute walk. Desks are organized by brand in a modern hall. Present your passport, license, and credit card. Munich pickup is German-efficient: 10-12 minutes. If heading to Austria, confirm the Vignette (Austrian motorway sticker) is included — without it, you'll be fined at the border.

Bavarian roads are among Europe's best-maintained, and MUC fleet cars are typically in excellent condition. Still, check the usual areas: bumper corners, wheel rims, and windscreen. Autobahn stone chips are the most common pre-existing damage. Note the fuel type carefully — German fleets include a mix of petrol, diesel, and increasingly, plug-in hybrids.

Explore Munich by Car

Munich is the launchpad for the Romantic Road and the Bavarian Alps. Drive south to Neuschwanstein Castle, explore Alpine villages like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or take the autobahn east to Salzburg across the Austrian border.

What to Know Before Driving from MUC

Germany drives on the right. Autobahn sections near Munich alternate between speed-limited (120-130 km/h) and unrestricted. The A99 ring road around Munich has a 120 km/h limit. Munich city has an Umweltzone requiring the green emissions sticker. For Austrian day trips, the Vignette (€9.90 for 10 days) is mandatory on all Austrian autobahns — buy before crossing the border. Bavaria has 6:1 Ruhetag (Sunday quiet hours) — noise restrictions apply.

MUC exits onto the A92 (west to Munich) and connects to the A9 (south toward the Alps, north toward Nuremberg). If headed to Munich center, the A92/A9 route takes 40-50 minutes. For the Austrian Alps (Innsbruck), take the A8/A93 south and ensure you have the Austrian Vignette sticker (€9.90 for 10 days). For the Romantic Road, head west on the A8.

Fuel Stations Near MUC

The Aral station at the MUC exit is convenient but slightly pricier. For a cheaper option, the Allguth station in Freising (5 min west) is consistently €0.04-0.06/L less.

Local Driving Tip

The A95 south to Garmisch and the Alps is fast but gets dangerously congested on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings during ski season. Stop at Starnberg for fuel — it's the last cheap station before mountain prices kick in.

Car Hire at MUC — FAQ

Do I need a credit card to rent a car at Munich Airport (MUC)?
Not necessarily. GetRentacar accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards with about 15% paid online and the balance to the owner. The other platforms leave the decision to the local supplier, and most of them want a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Germany?
Most suppliers set a minimum of 21 and add a young-driver surcharge below 25. GetRentacar is the exception here: its marketplace rents from age 18. QEEQ shows the young-driver fee inside the displayed total, so the price you compare is the price you pay.
Which car rental platform is cheapest at Munich Airport (MUC)?
No platform wins everywhere. Localrent lists local operators and is usually the price floor in Germany, with small deposits and 15–20% prepaid online. Run it against one broker on the same dates and compare the total including insurance and deposit, not the daily rate.
Is it cheaper to rent at MUC or in Munich?
Airport locations carry concession fees that typically add 10–15% to the base rate, so a city branch can be cheaper. Against that, off-airport pickup costs a shuttle and time, and one-way drop-offs are simpler from the airport. For short rentals the premium is often smaller than the transfer into Munich.
