Renting a Car at Manchester Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Manchester Airport (MAN) is the UK's third-busiest airport and the north of England's main international hub. The Car Rental Village is between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 — a 5-minute walk via covered walkway from either terminal. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and National share the purpose-built center. MAN is the starting point for the Lake District, Peak District, and the Yorkshire Dales.

🎯 Quick Tip

The M60 ring road around Manchester is the UK's most accident-prone motorway — traffic jams from fender-benders are almost daily occurrences. Check live traffic before choosing your route from MAN and consider the A34 or A538 as alternatives to the M56/M60 interchange.

Airport Pickup Tips

Follow 'Car Rental' signs from your terminal to the Rental Village — it's a 5-minute covered walk. Desks are organized by brand. Present your license, passport (if non-UK), and credit card. UK operators accept EU licenses for up to 12 months. If your license is in a non-Latin script, an IDP is required. Typical pickup: 15-20 minutes.

Northern England weather means salt, rain, and frost — check for rust spots on wheel arches and underbody, test the windscreen wipers and washers, and verify the heating system. Manchester's tight car parks leave door dings — check both sides. If renting for the Lake District, check tire tread depth; mountain passes require good grip.
